Bachelor’s Degree Programme: Biology and Ecology
The aim of the programme is to prepare experts with a broad education in modern biology and ecology, who acquire in-depth knowledge of (i) the structure, function, diversity, and evolution of organisms, and (ii) the principles governing the functioning of natural systems on Earth. Teaching is richly illustrated with examples from both local and global fauna and flora. In addition to theoretical training, strong emphasis is placed on practical education, both through laboratory exercises and field trips guided by experienced field biologists, conducted in the Czech Republic and abroad. Emphasis is also placed on developing students’ critical thinking—not only through discussion-based seminars but also during courses where students, under the guidance of leading experts, acquire skills necessary for independent creative work. The Biology and Ecology study programme is closely linked to scientific research conducted in the laboratories of the Department of Zoology, the Department of Botany, and the Department of Ecology and Environmental Sciences. The program concludes with a state final examination and the defence of a bachelor’s thesis.
